Melia and I will be spending a fun “big girl” day at Legoland Florida tomorrow! We were graciously invited to attend the premiere of The Lego Movie 4D – A New Adventure. This is their newest attraction opening this week. They are dubbing the event a “Hollywood-style movie premier built for kids”.
We are very excited…mostly because I haven’t told her it’s a 4D experience. Mean Mom? Maybe. She and Cameron were always mad at me after we did anything that was 4D. Made me swear we would never ride whatever it was again. So this same practice will apply to tomorrow night. We won’t need to ride it again, unless she chooses to do so. The first time though, I can play dumb.
I have to say, I’m most excited because I’m a huge fan of the Lego Movie. It was a movie Cameron and I saw together when it first came out. He loved the action sequences, jumping up and down in place as he always did. I loved the hidden adult messages. The ending was awesome! I loved this movie so much that I over hyped it to my husband and he ended up being a bit underwhelmed. Enjoyed it, but he didn’t see the same level of “awesomeness” I saw.
I’m not going to dive into the fact that the movie is a satire of the modern world. My lens was that of a parent. I was most interested in the message this sent to my child.

In honor of the love Cameron and I (OK mostly I) had for the Lego Movie, I thought it would be fitting to give you the reasons why. So, here you have it:
3 Reasons I Love The Lego Movie
- It’s OK To Be Different – In Bricksburg, Emmet (main character) works very hard to live his life according to the “Instructions to Fit In, Have Everyone Like You, and Always be Happy”. This is a socially accepted list of exactly how each citizen should live their life. It tells them what shows to watch, clothes to wear, and even includes a step to breathe. No one questions anything. Uniqueness is squashed by those that run the city. As the movie plays out, Emmet explores himself to learn who he really is. He finds that true happiness is achieved when he is true to himself and dares to live outside the box.
- Sometimes Breaking the Rules is OK – This one was big for us as Cameron was my rule follower. I would always look for opportunities where he could break the rules (crazy I know). In the movie, Lord Business and his evil doers put the rules in place to control the people. Their plan was to keep everything precisely as they liked it, status quo. When Emmet’s curiosity gets the best of him and he ignores the rules, he finds the “Piece of Resistance”. The key to defeating evil. The way to save society and allow them to live for themselves. Question everything and do what is right.
- Embrace Your Strengths – Throughout this movie Emmet compares himself to the Master Builders. He never feels he brings anything of value to the table. It’s not until Vetruvius challenges him to ignore what everyone else does and find his own way that he begins to shine. He fulfills the prophecy and becomes “The Special”, the person that is to save the world from Lord Business.
If you haven’t seen the movie, I highly recommend it! At the risk of over hyping, the end was the best part! When Emmet keeps falling through the vortex and we move to the real world, my head was spinning! I never expected it. It ended with a powerful message: Embrace your child’s creativity! Challenge them to build what they want versus just following the instructions.
What did you like best about the Lego Movie? Stop back later this week to hear all about the premiere even. I can’t wait to see what happens when Emmet, Wyldstyle, Unikitty, and the gang reunite.
