Best Tradition – Oh, The Places You’ll Go

You’ve likely seen the book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” by Dr. Seuss. A few years ago, when Cameron started Pre-K, David ordered this book online. He actually ordered 2 copies. One for Cameron (just turning 5 at the time), and one for Melia (only 2 at the time). It was the first time I had seen the book. So why did he order 2?

He went on to explain the tradition that goes with this book. Instantly, I was in love!

The tradition involves giving this book to your child on their graduation day. It is a Dr. Seuss story written for adults filled with lots of advice about life and inspiration for the future. The reason this gift is so special? Inside the book will be handwritten, personal notes from each of the teachers they had along the way.

This tradition takes commitment. There is definitely work involved. Each year remembering to get the book out. Doing this early enough that their teacher(s) have time to write something meaningful without feeling rushed. Doing the drop off/pick up without being noticed.

Last year I got busted. Cameron (6 at the time) saw the book in the car on the ride home. He LOVED books!! Of course he was just getting into Dr. Seuss. I remember him seeing the book and asking to take it so he could read it. I told him he couldn’t, that it wasn’t for him to read. We went around and around about it. He was so angry. How could I hide a book from him? All he wanted to do was read it. It took a couple of weeks for him to forget about it.

I just pulled the books out today. I reminisce now going through Cameron’s book. Just one more thing that will never be. It makes me sad to think about. Though it’s a nice reminder that he was loved.

Melia’s book is ready to take in. This was her Pre-K year so her story is just beginning. I can’t wait to see it fill up. Soon we will need to buy one for Sienna.

If you haven’t started this tradition, it’s never too late! I think it is still special even without all of the teachers notes. Just gather what you can and add in some from others that saw your child grow up. Sure to be a tear jerker!

Anyone else participating in this tradition?

    1. I thought the same thing when I learned of it. I’m not sure if I will be able to stick out the work of gathering a note from every teacher, but for now it’s simple. As they leave elementary school I may change my tactic…coaches, favorite teachers, those that made an impact. 🙂

  1. I do this also, although I realized the other night that I forgot to do it for my son’s Kindergarten teacher last year. Such a great book too!

    1. It can be modified as well. Buy a copy for their graduation and fill in your own mushy message. That may actually be less work in the long run. 😉
