Have you ever had a parenting fail so memorable that people count down the days they see it come up in their Facebook timeline? Well, this is mine! I’m pretty sure my daughter will forget. No one else will. So let’s talk Halloween 2015.
The kids were so excited because it was Halloween party day at school. Yipee!! This meant they got to dress up in a costume. Each of them got to pick out the bag of Halloween candy we were taking in for their classes. Their day would be full of treats and fun. I really don’t know how they slept the night before?!
Let me start by telling you, they didn’t!
Melia (4) was up 4 different times through the night. Cameron (7) appeared at my bed an hour before it was time for my alarm to go off. He was already dressed (costume and all), asking if he could go play video games. Yes, video games were still the priority…but he was dressed as a superhero.
I sent him back to bed…it was still dark outside. When he rolled out of bed (again) an hour later, he still had his shoes and cape on.
Not their official Halloween costumes, but they were so cute when I dropped them off!
Seems like such a great start to the day right? So where is this total parenting fail?
Melia’s Halloween (and costume) party is tomorrow…not today!
In my defense, this is a tiny school and the kids’ doors are on opposite sides of the building. So we always drop off at Cameron’s door as it cuts down on traffic for the other side. When I got the email about her party and made a trip to her door to sign up to bring candy, I never gave the date a second look. I just assumed Melia’s party was the same day (usually they are). OOPS!!
She was SO MAD when I picked her up from school. Steaming! She stormed out the door and screamed, “We weren’t supposed to dress up today! My party is tomorrow. I was the ONLY one!” Then she threw her crown on the sidewalk.
It took me a moment to realize what was happening. Cameron jumped in to fill me in. He said, “Her teacher told me that she can just dress up again tomorrow.”
At first, I let out a little chuckle…then tried to hold it in. I apologized to her because she was pretty upset. I think she was embarrassed. She told me she refused to dress up tomorrow.
When we got in the car, I laughed silently. So hard that I was practically crying. I really did feel bad though! But it was just so damn funny. I texted my husband to tell him. Then when I saw him, I could barely contain my laughter. To top it off, I’ve randomly started laughing about it all night long. Probably looked like a crazy woman.
Just another moment for the books. One more way I’m slowly trying to screw my kids up. She got over it by dinner time. I am still hiding my laughter from her though. Guess tomorrow is a new day. Rarely do you get a do over in life. I will try to savor the moment.
