Outside Play Ideas – Part 2 – Dirt

My quest continues! Getting my kids to play outside. They apparently need help figuring out what to do. So here is part 2. I am continuing with the basics.

This list will feature all of the things they can do while playing in the dirt. Because kids love dirt right?! Parents, get ready to do laundry!

5 Fun Things Kids Can Do in the Dirt:

  1. Mud Pies & Potions – This works with the sandbox or just a pile of dirt in the yard. Add a little water with the hose or a bucket. Instant fun! Add sand box toys or some tupperware from the kitchen. Mix in some grass, rocks, sticks, and weeds…you’ve got yourself some potions.
  2. Planting Seeds – Give them a corner of the yard/flower bed. Or give them some plastic cups and a bag of potting soil. They can plant seeds from a package you purchase. You can also get creative and have them collect seeds from apples, lemons, and anything else they eat. Do an experiment and plant them to see what/how they grow.
  3. Treasure Hunt – Fill their sandbox or a big flower pot/bucket with dirt. Drop little plastic bugs, marbles, rocks, or sea shells into it and mix it up. Let them dig with their hands or shovels to collect them. Assign points to the different colors/shapes see who collects the most. Or make one a special treasure and see who can find it first.
  4. Mud Puddles – Create some mud puddles and just jump in them! Jump over them. Squish your toes/fingers into them.
  5. Car Tracks – Build roads, hills, and tracks in the sand/dirt. Pack it down really good. Maybe some little mud holes. Add some toy trucks/cars. Instant race track and off-road course. Haul dirt in the back of dump trucks. Drive cars up and down the hills.

Have fun getting dirty!
